The great epic Mahabharath was composed by Maharishi Veda Vyasa/Krishna Dwaipayana, son of Sage Parasara and Sathyavati, a woman from fishermen clan.  Mahabharath describes the legend of Bharatha Dynasty.     It was written in 18 Parva such as Adhi Parva, Sabha Parva, Vana Parva, Virada Parva, Udhyoga Parva, Bhishma Parva, Drona Parva, Karna Parva, Shalya Parva, Soupthika Parva, Stri Parva, Shanthi Parva, Anushasana Parva, Ashwamedha Parva, Ashramavasika Parva, Musala Parva, Mahaprasthanika Parva and Swargarohana Parva and each Parva has divided into many Upaparva and has chapters in detail.    Adhi Parva depicts the life of King Dushyantha and his wife Shakunthala and their son Sarvadhamanan, who was famously known as Bharatha, a righteous ruler of Bharatha Empior.

Lord Brahma created deities, Sages and Prajapathis.  It was the beginning of the growth of human race from the sixty daughters of Daksha Prajapathi.  Pururavass,  Yayathi, Puru,  Dushyantha,  Bharatha, Shanthanu were born in the family of Dithi, one of the daughters of Daksha Prajapathi.

King Janamejaya, son of King Pareekshit conducted a grand Yagna to please serpent Gods.  There were a huge number of Rishis & Sages were present in the magnificent Yagna, Maharishi Veda Vyasa along with his disciple Rishi Vaishampayana and Sage Ugrasrava Sauti was also amongst them.   Rishi Vaishampayana narrated the stories of Kuru Dynasty to King Janamejaya at the time of Naga Yagna.  Later, this anecdote was described to the Sages and Rishis assembled in Naimisharanya by Sage Sauti, son of Sage Romaharshana/Lomaharshana, disciple of Maharishi Veda Vyasa.

Rishi Vaishampayana narrates the birth of Nakula and Sahadeva to King Pandu.  Madri, the second wife of Pandu met her husband in private and had a conversation about the admirable position of Kunthi after the birth of the three children; she desired to have to attain the same status of Kunthi, as they are equally related to Pandu.   She revealed her desire to have children in the same manner Kunthi had obtained her sons; she hesitatingly replied that if Kunthi provide some assistance to obtain offspring, which would be a huge favor to her, Madri always treated Kunthi as her rival; hence she was uncertain about the initial response of Kunthi to her request, furthermore Madri was unenthusiastic to receive any favor from Kunthi.   Madri spoke pleasingly about the hundred children born to Gandhari and elevated position of Kuru race; she praised the virtues and piousness of Kunthi though she was not equivalent to Madri’s birth status.  Pandu advised Madri that he was too unaware of the response of Kunthi after listening to the plea of Madri.  He pacified Madri that he will speak to Kunthi about Madri’s desire to have offspring and assured that Kunthi will not refuse any request of Pandu.

Pandu met Kunthi in her solitude and requested Kunthi to have more offspring to please his ancestors and for the expansion of his race.  He advised Kunthi to provide an opportunity to Madri to have offspring.  Kunthi immediately followed the words of her husband; the sacred hymn was instructed to Madri.  Madri earnestly prayed to Ashwini Kumaras, they provided two sons Nakula & Sahadeva of matchless splendor on Earth.  The mysterious voice declared that the children born would be unparallel to their attractiveness and energy.  The Rishis and Sages assembled in the mountain blessed the children.  Pandu expressed abundance of joy at the celestial beauty, copious energy, strength, and prowess and magnanimous virtues of their children.  Soon, the children became the favorites of Rishis & Rishi Patni’s resided in the woodland.

Kunthi expressed her anxiety to Pandu about the sacred hymn advised to Madri.  Kunthi worried that Madri may utilize the same to have many offspring to claim superiority over her in all status; she regretted about her ignorance for not invoking twin deities to obtain progeny and sadly revealed her innocence for not obtaining two children in one birth.

The five children of Pandu born of celestials were unparalleled with their immense strength and prowess.  They all the lived to bring great fame to Kuru dynasty, each of them bore the auspicious signs of handsomeness like soma, attractive physical features and excellence in Astra & Sastra.    The Rishis and Sages resided in the mountain were amazed to watch the children growing up valorous and righteous.   Years passed by the five sons of Pandu and hundred and one children of King Drutharashtra grew up into attractive young adolescents.

Pandu advised Kunthi to pray for a child who has powerful physical features; a Kshtriya must have strong physique to outshine his enemy.  Kunthi prayed to Lord Vayu to beget a son with the mighty powers of Him.  Shortly, a child was born to this couple with strong arms and powerful physique.  Kunthi received the striking child in her arms with all motherly affection.  Soon, she heard of terrifying voice of tiger, Kunthi rose from the ground without thinking the presence of the child who was fast asleep on her lap.  The child landed on the ground with a sudden thud from the top of the mountain, due to the immensity of the new born the mass of rock turned into wreckage.  Pandu and Kunthi amazed at the enormous strength of their child.  Soon a mysterious voice pronounced that the child born with remarkable strength shall be known as Vrikodhar Bhima.   On the same day, Duryodhana was born to Drutharashtra and Gandhari.

Pandu and Kunthi underwent severe austerities to obtain a virtuous progeny.  Lord Indra was pleased at the dedication of the couple; eventually they attained a child with remarkable prowess and glory.  A stunning child was born to this couple followed by a mysterious voice proclaiming that the child born to them would  be equivalent to Karthavirya in energy and Lord Shiva in prowess; he will spread the glory far and wide, this child would enhance the joy to his parents as  Lord Vishnu to Aditi,  he will held high the grandeur of Kurus and their prosperity amongst other Kingdoms, he will promote the welfare of Brahmin and perform various fire sacrifices, he will gratify Sankara (Lord Shiva) in the Warfield, he will obtain the great weapon Pasupathastra from Lord Shiva, he will spread the glories of Kurus and retrieve fortunes of his clan.  The celestial Gandharvas & Apsaras, Sons of Kadru and Vinatha, Lord Brahma, Saptha Rishis all were assembled to praise the birth of Arjuna (Vibhastu), son of Pritha and Pandu.

Pandu praised the knowledge of Kunthi, King Vyushithasva was equivalent to deities, and he has attained highly commendable virtues with his righteous deeds when he was alive.  Pandu described the egoless liberated life style of women broadly accepted in olden days; they were not dependent to their husband or relatives.  There were no prescribed rules for the married women to follow the vows of a married life   and it was not treated as anomalous either and they were lived like the life of birds and animals, it was not regarded as sinful at all.  There was no hard and fast rules imposed upon women in those days to follow their husband.  Pandu narrated the reason for brining restrictions in the life of a married woman and who brought them into practices.

Sage Uddhalaka and his chaste wife had a virtuous son Swethakethu who brought restrictions in the life of married women to protect them from the peril.  Swethakethu witnessed the pathetic state of his mother, she was seized by an unmarried old Brahmin against her will; Swethakethu was enraged to see the superciliousness of the Brahmin and vulnerability of his mother.  Sage Uddhalaka saw Swethakethu fuming with anger, advised him not to get annoyed by the action of the Brahmin, it was prevalent in those days that the married women were free to have physical relationship with any men, it was not compulsory to follow their own family or husband and vice versa men were free to have any woman at their own will,   due to this women and men had to face extreme guilt and turned out to be sinners.  Swethakethu disapproved the existing norms of life and established a new custom to protect people from defiance.  Pandu set appropriate examples before Kunthi, Madayanthi wife of Saudasa was instructed to have children from Sage Vashishta, she sincerely followed the words of her husband and attained child Asmaka from Sage Vashishta,  in the same way Kuru Dynasty obtained children from Maharishi Veda Vyasa.   Pandu explained the freedom as well as responsibilities of a married woman prescribed in the scriptures, she should be at the service of her husband after the menstruation period.  Pandu sorrowfully stated that as he was incapable to have progeny, Kunthi should follow his command.  Pandu raised both the hands above his head and prayed to Kunthi to have a child from a Brahmin of high virtues that would provide liberation to him.

Kunthi narrated an incident happened while she was in her maiden days in Kunthiboj.  She was serving the Sages and holy men visited the palace.  Once, Sage Durvassa visited the palace of Kunthibhoj was relentlessly served by Kunthi, Sage Durvassa was pleased at the dedication and devotion of Kunthi and provided her with a boon to invoke any deities with the sacred hymns, they would be responsible  to provide child to her.  Kunthi affirmed that the boon provided by Sage Durvass will never go astray; it is the accurate time to have the fruit and experience the bliss.  Pandu was in a state ecstasy advised Kunthi to invoke Lord Dharmarajan, one who protects righteousness in the Universe would provide a progeny to protect Kuru Dynasty.  Kunthi dutifully followed the words of her husband and circumambulated him and immersed in prayers.

Rishi Vaishampayana narrated the conversation between Pandu & Kanthi during their stay at woodland.  Kunthi was traumatized after listening to Pandu’s command to have a child from a Brahmin or someone superior to Pandu as Niyoga.   She heartily desired to have a child from her husband and her willingness to die with him.  Kunthi was determined to remain unblemished in her life and refused to approach anyone for a child other than her husband.  She narrated the story of a righteous King Viyushithsva and his chaste wife Badra.

There was an honorable ruler King Vyushithasva, he ruled his kingdom wisely for several years and the people of his Kingdom were happy.  He conducted a grand Yagna to please the deities, Lord Indra and scholarly Brahmins were present in the Yagna.  King Vyushithasva attained highly meritorious rewards from the Yagna.  In order to expand the Kingdom and its resources, he performed an Ashwamedha Yaga, eventually he defeated all the neighboring Kingdoms and took good control over them, the countries came under the rule of King Vyushithasva was obliged to pay tax.   Thus, he ruled the Kingdom judiciously for several years and conducted several Yagnas and Yagas to please the deities, the scholarly Brahmins were presented with abundance of alms as charity during the fire sacrifices. In this way, he attained highly commendable rewards and his Kingom flourished with rich resources.  He continued to perform admirable Yagnas like Agnisthoma and significant Yagnas and Yagas mentioned in the Veda Sastra.

King Vyushithasva had a gorgeous wife Bhadra, she was the most beautiful woman in the Universe.   This loveliest couple has found plentiful time in the company of each other and found immense pleasure in the physical relationship with each other.  King Vyushithasva’s excessive physical attraction towards his wife caused severe breathlessness consequently he passed away.   Bhadra was devastated at the death of her beloved husband.  Kunthi narrated the miseries of a widow; it was wretched life for Bhadra after the death of her husband, she desired to embrace death and follow her husband.   She pleaded her husband to allow her to follow him after death too, revealed her helplessness to live in the absence of him, a woman without a husband serve no purpose to the society; Bhadra cried her heart out at the separation from her husband, she experienced the agonies of hellish torture while she was alive.  Bhadra discarded all the comforts and adopted sacred grass as her bed, treated herself as the sinner with tears teeming all over she waited to hear command from her deceased husband.  Bhadra wept with mounted pain and closely embraced the lifeless body of her husband, soon she could hear a mysterious voice informed Bhadra that she would be blessed with children, further advised Bhadra to leave the place and remain with the lifeless body of her husband in her bed on the eighth or fourteenth day of full moon that would provide her progeny.  In this way, Bhadra attained seven children from the lifeless body of her husband.  Kunthi praised the virtues of Pandu and consoled him that the meritorious rewards attained would help them to have children.
