The great epic Mahabharath was composed by
Maharishi Veda Vyasa/Krishna Dwaipayana, son of Sage Parasara and Sathyavati, a
woman from fishermen clan. Mahabharath describes the legend of Bharatha
Dynasty. It was written in 18 Parva such as Adhi Parva,
Sabha Parva, Vana Parva, Virada Parva, Udhyoga Parva, Bhishma Parva, Drona
Parva, Karna Parva, Shalya Parva, Soupthika Parva, Stri Parva, Shanthi Parva,
Anushasana Parva, Ashwamedha Parva, Ashramavasika Parva, Musala Parva,
Mahaprasthanika Parva and Swargarohana Parva and each Parva has divided into
many Upaparva and has chapters in detail. Adhi Parva depicts
the life of King Dushyantha and his wife Shakunthala and their son
Sarvadhamanan, who was famously known as Bharatha, a righteous ruler of
Bharatha Empior.
Lord Brahma created deities, Sages and
Prajapathis. It was the beginning of the growth of human race from the
sixty daughters of Daksha Prajapathi. Pururavass, Yayathi,
Puru, Dushyantha, Bharatha, Shanthanu were born in the family of
Dithi, one of the daughters of Daksha Prajapathi.
King Janamejaya, son of King Pareekshit conducted
a grand Yagna to please serpent Gods. There were a huge number of Rishis
& Sages were present in the magnificent Yagna, Maharishi Veda Vyasa along
with his disciple Rishi Vaishampayana and Sage Ugrasrava Sauti was also amongst
them. Rishi Vaishampayana narrated the stories of Kuru Dynasty to
King Janamejaya at the time of Naga Yagna. Later, this anecdote was
described to the Sages and Rishis assembled in Naimisharanya by Sage Sauti, son
of Sage Romaharshana/Lomaharshana, disciple of Maharishi Veda Vyasa.
Rishi Vaishampayana narrates the birth of Nakula
and Sahadeva to King Pandu. Madri, the second wife of Pandu met her
husband in private and had a conversation about the admirable position of
Kunthi after the birth of the three children; she desired to have to attain the
same status of Kunthi, as they are equally related to Pandu. She
revealed her desire to have children in the same manner Kunthi had obtained her
sons; she hesitatingly replied that if Kunthi provide some assistance to obtain
offspring, which would be a huge favor to her, Madri always treated Kunthi as
her rival; hence she was uncertain about the initial response of Kunthi to her
request, furthermore Madri was unenthusiastic to receive any favor from
Kunthi. Madri spoke pleasingly about the hundred children born to
Gandhari and elevated position of Kuru race; she praised the virtues and
piousness of Kunthi though she was not equivalent to Madri’s birth
status. Pandu advised Madri that he was too unaware of the response of
Kunthi after listening to the plea of Madri. He pacified Madri that he
will speak to Kunthi about Madri’s desire to have offspring and assured that
Kunthi will not refuse any request of Pandu.
Pandu met Kunthi in her solitude and requested
Kunthi to have more offspring to please his ancestors and for the expansion of
his race. He advised Kunthi to provide an opportunity to Madri to have
offspring. Kunthi immediately followed the words of her husband; the
sacred hymn was instructed to Madri. Madri earnestly prayed to Ashwini
Kumaras, they provided two sons Nakula & Sahadeva of matchless splendor on
Earth. The mysterious voice declared that the children born would be
unparallel to their attractiveness and energy. The Rishis and Sages
assembled in the mountain blessed the children. Pandu expressed abundance
of joy at the celestial beauty, copious energy, strength, and prowess and
magnanimous virtues of their children. Soon, the children became the
favorites of Rishis & Rishi Patni’s resided in the woodland.
Kunthi expressed her anxiety to Pandu about the
sacred hymn advised to Madri. Kunthi worried that Madri may utilize the
same to have many offspring to claim superiority over her in all status; she
regretted about her ignorance for not invoking twin deities to obtain progeny
and sadly revealed her innocence for not obtaining two children in one birth.
The five children of Pandu born of celestials
were unparalleled with their immense strength and prowess. They all the
lived to bring great fame to Kuru dynasty, each of them bore the auspicious
signs of handsomeness like soma, attractive physical features and excellence in
Astra & Sastra. The Rishis and Sages resided in the
mountain were amazed to watch the children growing up valorous and righteous.
Years passed by the five sons of Pandu and hundred and one children
of King Drutharashtra grew up into attractive young adolescents.
