Mahabharath !! Vanaprasthashrama life of Pandu !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Rishi Vaishampayana narrates the Vanaprasthashrama life of Pandu, dedicated for severe penance and austerities.  Within a short span of time, Pandu gained huge admiration from the holy men and saints lived in the woodland.  He relentlessly served them and washed off his egos, he sincerely underwent austerities and had a great control over his senses, the sages and holy praised Pandu for his determination.  They treated Pandu as their own relative/friend/son/brother.  Several years of continuous austerities and penance raised Pandu to the state of Brahmarishi.

On an Amavasya day, all the Rishis and Sages assembled in a place to conduct a journey to Brahma Loka.  Pandu arrived on the spot and earnestly enquired about their journey.  They informed Pandu that it was the day all the deities, Pitrus and Rishis assemble in Brahma Loka/Sthya Loka and they are proceeding to the world of self-manifested Lord Brahma.  Pandu informed Kunthi &Madhri and prepared to leave with the holy men through the complicated path of hills.  The holy men narrated the difficulties involved in the journey to Sathya Loka.  The King of hills should be climbed up with utmost dedication, crossing the uneven paths of Garden of Lord Kubera and crossing the places where the affluence of deities, Apsaras and Gandharvas safeguarded in the magnificent palaces, while crossing vast rivers of enormous depth requires extreme care, it is not possible for an ordinary human to conduct journey through the dangerous hills.  Some of the areas in the hills are covered with thick snow and uninhabitable, in some places there is no vegetation or animals, in some areas are flooded with uninterrupted downpour, some of the areas are filled with dangerous species of animals where only air and some of the holy men can enter into those places.  The holy men revealed their deepest concern about Kunthi & Madhri’s trip through the most dangerous hills and discouraged Pandu to follow them.

Pandu was crestfallen, he gloomily answered them that it was his ill fate to remain childless and a childless person cannot go to Sathyaloka.  Pandu cursed his destiny and revealed his anxiousness about his inability to perform homage to ancestors.  All human on Earth born with four types of debt such as Deva Runa, Rishi Runa, Pitru Runa and Manushya Runa and each individual has the responsibility to pay off the debt at the right time of their life time; otherwise they will not attain salvation.  The deities can be pleased with the performance of Yagna &Yaga, visiting pilgrim places on Earth etc.. in this way the Deva Runa can be paid off.  Rishi’s can be pleased with the Supreme knowledge, ultimate wisdom & intelligence, knowledge in Sastra & Puranas, etc… in this way Rishi Runa can be paid off.  Pitrus can be satisfied with the virtuous progeny and performing homage to ancestors, in this way Pitru Runa can be paid off.  The humans can be pleased with the good character, without harming or hurting anyone by action, word or deed, in this way Manushya Runa can be paid off.  Pandu miserably stated that he had paid off Deva Runa, Rishi Runa and Manushya Runa, but he was unsuccessful in pleasing his Pitrus.  He earnestly prayed to the holy men to suggest how to obtain a virtuous offspring as the way his father Vichithraveerya attained progeny from the blameless Maharishi Veda Vyasa.

The holy men assembled were advised Pandu, the irreproachable will have virtuous, sinless and devoted children like deities.  They advised him that they could foresee the birth of righteous offspring’s to him, and comforted him to be patient to receive the fruit of his action.  Pandu once again became gloomy after receiving the joyful news from the holy men; he remembered the curse of Sage Kindhma.  Pandu approached Kunthi in a secluded place and advised her to think for an offspring to get over from the miseries.  Pandu narrated the disgrace of a childless, performing Yagna and Yagas, charities, attaining spiritual growth and performing austerities would never bring any devoutness, unless and until there is no offspring to perform homage to ancestors.  Pandu lamented over his powerlessness to have offspring’s with his chaste wives due to the curse of Sage Kindhma.

Pandu describes Prudha/Kunthi about the categories of perfect and imperfect progeny according to Dharma Sastra, six categories of progeny are accepted as perfect for the family and for the performance of duties and responsibilities involved in the Sastra and another six categories are treated as members of the family not as a perfect progeny.

(a) Child born to a married couple is treated as perfect

(b) Child born to a married woman from a proficient man through illicit relationship is

treated as second category.

(c) Child born to a married woman from a rich man through illicit relationship is treated as third category.

(d) Child born to a woman after the death of her husband is treated as fourth category

(e) Child born to a woman before marriage is treated as sixth category

(f) Child born to a woman of immoral character is seventh category

(g) An adopted child is eighth category

(h) A child attained through wealth is ninth category

(i) A child come forward and accepts a couple as his/her parents is tenth category

(j) A child born to a married woman who was already conceived the child before marriage but gave birth after the marriage is treated as tenth category.

(k) Son of brother is treated as eleventh category.

(l) A child born to a low caste woman is treated as twelfth category.

It was prescribed in the Sastra that if a family lack virtuous offspring due to ill fortune, the woman should desire for a child from a superior family. It was suggested by Swayambu Manu that a childless couple can have a child from the source of Niyoga.  Pandu advised Kunthi that as he was unsuccessful to give a child, she can have child from a person equivalent to him or somebody superior to him.  He described the courage of the daughter of Sharadhanthaya to receive children from a Brahmin, eventually she had three offspring from the Brahmin and Durjayan was the first child born to this couple.  He advised Kunthi to have child from a righteous Brahmin as Niyoga.

Rishi Vaishampayana narrates the pathetic state of King Panu inflicted with the curse of Sage Kindhma.  King Pandu returned to the palace and sorrowfully explained the tragic incidents happened in the woodlands.  Pandu gravely described the happenings in the forest to Kunthi & Madhri and the enlightened members of the assembly of Kingdom of Hasthinapur, he felt ashamed of his dishonorable act and cried his heart out upon the ill fate of Hasthinapur without a successor to rule.  He mournfully thought of his father Vichithraveerya who was born to the righteous King Shanthanu, but King Vichithraveerya utterly failed to keep up the ethics of an ideal King, he was obsessed with the physical relationship, he was not an ideal husband for Ambika and Ambalika and remained unsuccessful in providing a progeny, a legal heir to the throne of Hasthinapur.  King Pandu lamented over his callousness, though he was born to the blameless Sage Maharishi Veda Vyasa/Krishna Dwaipayana and Ambalika.  King Pandu was extremely disappointed on his appalling fate, decided to seek the path of salvation, he was well aware of the fact that the worldly desires and offspring’s are the major hindrances for penance, accept Sanyasa.  He firmly trusted on his will power and decided to undergo severe austerities and remain ascetic in all his life.  King Pandu decided to leave his dearest wives, relatives and the people of Kingdom of Hasthinapur forever and move to woodland to lead a life of an ascetic.  King Pandu promised to reject all kinds’ emotions like affection and hatred, live a life of austere without paying attention to basic requirements, live under the shade of tree or in any deserted homes.  He was determined to lead a plain life, with no desires, no interest to add fame, wanted to lead a contended and happy life, kind to all animals and never hurt anyone and treat every creatures in the world as his offspring.  He decided to leave comforts of the palace and ego, approach people and beg for food; whatever food collected would be utilized as the meal of the day, if there was none available, he prepared to remain without it.  He decided to consider enemies and friends with no difference, never think of evil to anyone, will not be sacred of death, will wash of the sins committed and be righteous, perform duties and responsibilities without its fruitful outcome, live a life of wind free from attachments, will not be anxious about the respect or disrespect.

Rishi Vaishampayana continued, King Pandu was unhappy to see Kunthi & Madhri in a state of desolation, he shed tears with them.  Shortly the news of acceptance of Vanaprasthashrama of King Pandu was informed to Ambalika mother of Pandu, Vidur, friend and dearest elder brother Drutharashtra, highly revered Sathyavati and Bhishma Pithamaha, Kripacharya Acharya of Kurus , Brahmin intellectuals & Vedic Scholars and the peoples of Hasthinapur.   Kunthi and Madhri approached Pandu and revealed their promise to follow him as his chaste wives, assisting him in living a life of an ascetic, took a vow to control their emotions and desires, leaving the comforts and luxuries of palace, undergo severe austerities with their husband to obtain the devoutness.  They sorrowfully stated that if Pandu was not willing to take them to woodland, they will sacrifice their life right away.    Pandu narrated to his dearest wives about  his responsibilities involved in the living life of an ascetic;   he will be living in the  dense forests, undergo severe penance and perform fire sacrifices to please the deities,   wearing the attire made of leaves, consuming fruits and vegetables to wave off hunger and the food consumed will be minimal to stay alive and habituated with the extreme heat and cold conditions, ignore the thirst and hunger, live in solitude and absorb in meditation,  he will satisfy Pitrus and deities by performing daily rituals and live in extreme isolation.  Further,  Pandu took a vow to accept all the duties and responsibilities involved in Vanaprasthashrama.

As an initiation of Vanaprathashrama, King Pandu removed his glorious crown, precious jewels, earrings and magnificent royal attires and offered them to Brahmins.  Kunthi and Madhri dutifully followed their husband.  Pandu advised the servants to inform everyone about his Vanaprasthashrama with his wives and their decision to discard all the glories, comforts, and fame.  The people of Hasthinapur were distraught at the decision of their beloved King Pandu.

Drutharashtra cried his heart out for his beloved brother after listening to the dismal fate of Pandu.  He too decided to discard the comforts of royal life and practiced austerities for quite some time. In the meantime, Pandu and his wives proceeded through the   woodlands of Pramankodi, Narakashadham and Chitraradham, Chathurshrungi and Kalakoodam.  Pandu underwent severe austerities, performed Yagnas and Yagas and he was   always surrounded by Sages and holy men throughout his journey.

Rishi Vaishampayana narrates the birth of Pandavas and Kauravas, their names in the order of birth to King Janamejaya. Rishi Vaishmpayana describes the birth of Pandavas as the incarnation of deities.

King Pandu went on a hunting expedition to the south of Himalayas; he witnessed horde of deer grazing merrily on the lush green land, the chief amongst the herd was extremely captivating, it was wrapped up in the service of its female partner.  King Pandu aimed at the deer with his sharp golden arrows, instantly both the deer fallen with a thud on the ground.  Alas! It was not deer, it was a sage and his wife in disguise, they were blissfully enjoying in the company of each other’s in the serene land.  The arrow pierced through the body of sage and his wife, they cried out loudly from the excruciating pain.  Sage Kindhma painfully stated that man with load of anger or interest in physical attraction would kill someone on their gratifying moment.  King Pandu sorrowfully answered that the hunters would always treat the animals before them as their enemies and it’s not a new practice at all.  Sage Agastya conducted a grand Yagna, he chased all the deer in the forest and sacrificed them in the sacrificial fire to please the deities. Sage Kidhma stated that in the war field, the warriors always follows the war tactics and observe certain rules to attack their enemies, just like it was not the right technique to attack an animal while it was having pleasure time with its partner.  King Pandu retorted that the hunter never check the state of an animal before him.  Sage Kindhma benevolently replied that he was not all worried of the wound the sharp arrows has created or least anxious about death, it is a vicious kind of act  which cause sin to kill animals while they are having physical relationship and no righteous person would perform such  a sinful act.  The sense of physical attraction is common to all and it is the precious moment adds admiration to them. Sage Kindhma revealed that he was having pleasurable moment with his chaste wife, but everything ended in vain.  It was one of most repulsive and dishonorable act form a King of Purus; this would bring him hellish torture after death.  Sage Kindhma continued that the respectable King Pandu must be aware of the significance and preciousness of physical attraction between a husband and wife; he should not have committed a sin which leads him to hell.  According to Dharma Sastra it is the responsibility of a King to punish whoever commits sin, undergoes illicit acts and work against the prescribed rules in Dharma Sastra.  Sage Kindhma was living a life of austere, lived a peaceful life in the serenity of the forest.  Sage Kindhma declared that he will definitely curse King Pandu for his dishonorable act; King Pandu will face his death at the time of gratifying moment with his wife.  Sage Kindhma does not wanted to have physical relation with his wife in the form of a human, so the couple has assumed the form of deer and they were having blissful time in the company of each other, but King Pandu was not having the patience to recognize their real form as Brahmin.  Sage Kindhma whispered at his death bed, King Pandu will not have the sin of Brahmahathya as he was killed deer, but his fate will not change, he will have death at the time of physical relation with his wife and his wife will follow him to the other world due to respect and the pain of separation from her husband.    Sage Kindhma cursed King Pandu and painfully left his mortal coil with his wife.

Mahabharath !! Birth of Pancha Pandava !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Pandu with his wives Kunthi and Madhri lived a blissful life in the woodland, he was anxious to see his wives’ grief without progeny.  Pandu advised Kunthi to have a child from a Brahmin or a Sage as Niyoga, Kunthi revealed her vow to remain loyal to her husband, therefore refused to follow the same.  Pandu narrates the story about the chastity of the mother of Swethakethu.

Sage Uddhalaka and his chaste wife Kushikathmaja had a virtuous son Swethakethu, the couple underwent severe penance for several years, Swethakethu engrossed in the service to his parents.  Once, an old Brahmin Vipravan visited Sage Uddhalaka, he found Swethakethu enthusiastically serving his parents.  The Brahmin enquired about the child, Sage Uddhalaka introduced Swethakethu as their devoted son.  Vipravan sorrowfully exposed his pathetic state, he remained an ascetic all his life, and according to Dharma Sastra a childless never attains salvation without performing rituals after death.  He earnestly requested Sage Uddhala to allow him to have a child in his chaste wife Kushikathmaja and right away took hold of her hand.  Swethakethu became furious at the unruly behavior of Vipravan, he grasped his mother’s hand screamed at Vipravan to leave his mother at once.  Vipravan responded that he would leave Kushikathmaja after obtaining a son for the performance of rituals to please his ancestors, also stated that it is not a sin for his mother to have a physical relationship with him, it is permissible in the Sastra for a childless Brahmin and deities can have offspring from a married woman.  Swethakethu in an anguish and pain announced that it is necessary for every woman should undergo the practice of abstaining from physical relationship on moral grounds, otherwise they would be treated as sinners.

After listening to Pandu, Kunthi revealed the Devabhoothi Manthra that was received from Sage Durvassa as a boon to have virtuous progeny.  This pleasant information brought Pandu in a state of ecstasy; he was extremely unhappy about the fate of Hasthinapur without a legal heir to the throne.  Pandu overjoyed at the fortune Kunthi had brought to Kuru Dynasty.   Pandu prompted Kunthi to invoke Lord Dharmaraja to obtain a righteous child, one who follow the path of morality at all times and benevolent.  Thus, Kunthi sincerely chanted the hymn and pleased Lord Dharmaraja.  A child was born to this couple as desired with the blessings of Lord Dharmaraja that was Yudhishtira.  Yudhishitira was born as legal heir to the throne of Hasthinapur.  Shortly, at the instruction of her husband Kunthi invoked Lord Vayu and earnestly prayed for a child who has the supremacy and might of Lord Vayu.  Vrukodhar Bhima was born to the couple with marvelous vigor on his arms as a blessing of Lord Vayu.  Later, Kunthi invoked Lord Indra and prayed for a child; Lord Indra blessed the couple with a child Arjun, who has abundance of compassion and profound skill in Archery.  It was the decision of Kunthi that Madhri should not experience the agony due to the absence of progeny any longer.  Kunthi sincerely taught the hymn to Madhri, she earnestly prayed to Ashwini Kumaras to have offspring’s.  Madhri was blessed with two sons Nakul and Sahadeva, they were intuitive and had perfect knowledge in Vaidhya Sastra.  Pandu along with his wives and all five children lived a heavenly life in the woodland.

Mahabharath !! Birth of Kauravas & Pandavas !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Rishi Vaishampayan narrates the birth of Kauravas and Pancha Pandavas.   Gandhari gave birth to hundred and one children of Drutharashtra.   Drutharashtra had a son in his illicit relationship with a Vaishya woman.  In the meantime Kunthi gave birth to three sons and Madhri gave birth to two sons in the woodland.  King Janamejaya earnestly prayed to Rishi Vaishampayana to describe the whole happenings in detail, how Gandhari gave birth to hundred sons and how many years it took?  How Pandu and his wives blessed with five children when the King had already a curse upon him by Sage Kindhma ?

Rishi Vaishampayana continued, Maharishi Veda Vyasa reached the palace of Gandhar with tired of hunger and thirst.  Gandhari received Maharishi Veda Vyasa with utmost reverence; she respectfully served him with his needs and took good care of him.  Maharishi Veda Vyasa was pleased at the dedication and devotion of Gandhari and blessed her.  Maharishi Veda Vyasa offered her a boon as desired by her to have hundred sons with the intelligence, power and strength of her husband.  In due course of time, Gandhari conceived with the child of Drutharashtra, she had to carry the fetus for more than two years in her womb.  Gandhari was extremely disappointed and in a wretched state, she had to face sheer criticism of her husband and the family due to the unusual stay of the fetus in her womb.  It was the moment Kunthi gave birth to a stunning child Yudhishtira, this joyful news propelled Gandhari in a miserable state, she forcefully banged on her stomach, and consequently she gave birth to a mass of flesh.  Maharishi Veda Vyasa envisioned the misfortune of Gandhari with his power of meditation, arrived on the spot enquired the reason for the wreck.   Gandhari sorrowfully described her mental state after receiving the news about the birth of Kunthi’s child.  Maharishi Veda Vyasa comforted her that the boon given to her would never go waste.  At the instruction of Maharishi Veda Vyasa the mass of flesh was divided into hundred in the size of a thumb and each pieces were filled in hundred mud pots and poured ghee over the top along with the exceptional herbs required for the growth of the child.  This hundred mud pots were carefully secured with the above resources were moved to a cavern under the Earth.   Before leaving for penance Maharishi Veda Vyasa advised Gandhari to wait for another two years to open the hundred pots.  In due course of time, the eldest son Duryodhana was born to Gandhari and Drutharashtra.  It was predestined that Yudhishtira, the elder son of King Pandu & Kunthi, the legal heir of the throne of Hasthinapur was born elder to Duryodhana.  Duryodhana’s birth brought bad omens to the Kingdom, Bhishma and Vidura were shocked at the ill fortune brought by the new born of Drutharashtra, it was on the same day Kunthi gave birth to Bhima.   Immediately after the birth Duryodhana shrieked like a donkey, it provoked the donkey’s, foxes, owls and crows to raise their loud cries correspondingly.    The nature shown its extreme dislike at the birth of Duryodhana, nature calamities like some parts were engulfed in fire and windblown like tornado created a mayhem and dismay.  Immediately,  Drutharashtra conducted an assembly of Kripacharya/ Acharya of Kurus, Bhishma Pithamaha, Vidur and Brahmin scholars to discuss about the legal heir to the throne of Hasthinapur.  Yudhishtira, son of Pandu & Kunthi declared as the legal heir to the throne, Drutharashtra raised a question about the successor to the throne and enquired the intellectuals assembled whether his son would be eligible for the same?  Instantly, there were deafening screams of carnivores ruined the peace of the assembly.  Vidura replied that, on the basis of the time of birth of elder son of Drutharashtra would destroy the sanctity of the Kuru Dynasty; he would possess all evil character and annihilate the Kurus from the Universe.  It will be safe for the Kingdom to take away the life of the newborn.  Vidura comforted Drutharashtra that if he would sacrifice his first child, it will do good for the Kuru dynasty, and the remaining ninety nine sons would remove the grief caused.   Vidura narrates Dharma Sastra briefly.  A single member can be sacrificed for the benefit of entire family, one family can be sacrificed for the benefit of entire village, one village can be sacrificed for the benefit of a country, and a person can be sacrificed the whole world for the benefit of betterment of his soul.   All the intellectuals assembled were strongly agreed Vidura’s statement about the elder son of Drutharashtra, encouraged him to take away the life the child for benefit of the Kuru dynasty.  Ultimately, Drutharashtra refused to follow any of the advices of Kripacharya and the enlightened members of the assembly.  All the children were come out of the pot in a month.   Thus, Drutharashtra and Gandhari had hundred sons and a daughter Dusshala.   Drutharashtra also had a son Yuyutsu in his illicit relationship with a Vaishya woman who was taking care of him during the pregnancy period of Gandhari.
