The great epic Mahabharath was composed by Maharishi Veda Vyasa/Krishna Dwaipayana, son of Sage Parasara and Sathyavati, a woman from fishermen clan.  Mahabharath describes the legend of Bharatha Dynasty.     It was written in 18 Parva such as Adhi Parva, Sabha Parva, Vana Parva, Virada Parva, Udhyoga Parva, Bhishma Parva, Drona Parva, Karna Parva, Shalya Parva, Soupthika Parva, Stri Parva, Shanthi Parva, Anushasana Parva, Ashwamedha Parva, Ashramavasika Parva, Musala Parva, Mahaprasthanika Parva and Swargarohana Parva and each Parva has divided into many Upaparva and has chapters in detail.    Adhi Parva depicts the life of King Dushyantha and his wife Shakunthala and their son Sarvadhamanan, who was famously known as Bharatha, a righteous ruler of Bharatha empire.

Lord Brahma created deities, Sages and Prajapathis.  It was the beginning of the growth of human race from the sixty daughters of Daksha Prajapathi.  Pururavass,  Yayathi, Puru,  Dushyantha,  Bharatha, Shanthanu were born in the family of Dithi, one of the daughters of Daksha Prajapathi.

King Janamejaya, son of King Pareekshit conducted a grand Yagna to please serpent Gods.  There were a huge number of Rishis & Sages were present in the magnificent Yagna, Maharishi Veda Vyasa along with his disciple Rishi Vaishampayana and Sage Ugrasrava Sauti was also amongst them.   Rishi Vaishampayana narrated the stories of Kuru Dynasty to King Janamejaya at the time of Naga Yagna.  Later, this anecdote was described to the Sages and Rishis assembled in Naimisharanya by Sage Sauti, son of Sage Romaharshana/Lomaharshana, disciple of Maharishi Veda Vyasa.

Rishi Vaishampayana narrates the return of Kunthi with her five children to the Kingdom of Hasthinapur.  The great Rishis and holy men lived in the woodland conducted a congregation to discuss about the further proceedings after listening to the heartbreaking incident, the death of the righteous King Pandu.  They collectively decided that the blameless King Pandu ascended to heaven leaving a great task before them and it is their responsibility to safely entrust Kunthi and her children to the Kingdom of Hasthinapur.  Rishis and Sages proceeded to Hasthinapur with the residual of King Pandu and Madri, their five children and Kunthi in order to assign them in the custody of Bhishma Pithamaha and Drutharashtra.  It was indeed a tiresome journey for Kunthi and her children mentally as well as physically.  Finally, they arrived at the main entrance of the Palace of Hasthinapur and it was duly informed to King Drutharashtra and Bhishma Pithamaha.  The people of entire Hasthinapur gathered to witness the congregation of great Rishis and Sages.  It was the time of sunset, the people and their families were flown from different parts of Hasthinapur, huge number of Brahmanas, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras were assembled to witness the event.  It was certainly a calm assembly of the people; the whole atmosphere was filled with holiness to receive their revered King Pandu’s children and his wife.  Shortly, Bhishma Pithamaha, son of King Shanthanu, Somadatta/Valhika, Drutharashtra, Vidura, Sathyavati, Princesses of Kasi, Gandhari, hundred sons of Drutharashtra followed by royal household appeared before them.  The priests of Hasthinapur received the Sages and Rishis with utmost reverence.  The elderly Rishi narrated the incidents happened in the woodland,  spoke highly about the virtuous of King Pandu who has adopted the Vanaprasthashrama with his two wives after abandoning all the worldly pleasures, lived a life of an ascetic.  These couples had five children of celestials due to the indispensable purpose of Almighty.  The elder one is Yudhishtira with the righteousness of Lord Dharmaraj,  Bhima with the mightiness of Lord Vayu, Arjun possessed benevolence and marvelous skill in Archery as Lord Indra and Nakula& Sahadeva born to Madri from Ashwini Kumaras.  These five children has possessed virtues and obtained vast knowledge in Veda Sastra that will provide greatest pleasure to all.  The blameless King Pandu left his mortal coil seventeen days before; his wife Madri sacrificed her life in the funeral pyre of Pandu.  The Rishis and Sages advised the enlightened members of the assembly to perform whatever rites remaining for the benefit of the departed soul and offered the residue of Pandu and Madri, instructed them to receive the children of Pandu and his wife with all honors.   Further, the initial rite of Pandu was performed in the woodland, the virtuous Pandu who was the powerful enthusiast and the pride of Kurus requires the performance of annual Sapindakaranam/Shradhha that would install him properly in the Pitru Loka.  The Rishis and holy men after the gracious lecture to Kurus, instantly disappeared from the very sight of the people.  The people of Hasthinapur amazed at this sight and returned to their homes.

Rishi Vaishampayana narrated the boundless joy of King Pandu witnessing his children, the five handsome youth growing diligently before him.  It was the beginning of spring season, the marvelous mountains surrounded by the flourishing woodland attracts every creature on the Earth.  King Pandu along with his wife Madhri were delightfully stroll through the beautiful woodland watching over the newly blossomed trees of Palasa, Tilakas, Mangoes, Champaka, Parihadrakas, Karnikaras, Asoka, Kesara, Atimuktas,  Kuruvakas, swarms of honey bees, Parijatha, Kokilas and multiples of flowering trees of various fragrances were bent down to the ground with the heaviness of flowers.  Many of the ponds were overloaded with the aromatic lotuses of various colors.  The spectacular surroundings and the presence of gorgeous Madri kindled a burning desire in Pandu, observing young Madri in her marvelous attire flamed up his desire like wild fire.  Madri’s beautiful pearl like eyes and attractive physical features mounted his desire; he vigorously seized her against her will.  Madri trembled with fear thinking about the consequences of their action, Pandu was completely forgotten about the misfortune and he was overpowered by desire.  Pandu approached Madri with augmented craving and forcibly held her in his arms, as if enthusiastically embracing his own death.  Consequently, the virtuous soul King Pandu embraced death while having physical relationship with his wife Madri.

Madhri wept bitterly holding the lifeless body of King Pandu.   In the meantime, Kunthi and her sons along with Madri’s children went on search for Madri and Pandu, finally they located the place where cries of grief heard.  Madri pleaded Kunthi to keep away their children from the pathetic sight.  Kunthi advised the children to remain in a spot and rushed to her feet, there she could witness the lifeless body of her husband.  Kunthi cried her heart out followed with thousands of queries to Madri.   Kunthi grieved over the miserable incident, she blamed herself for being careless as a wife, she held Madri responsible for the piteous act, she should have been more cautious with Pandu in solitude, she should have remembered the curse of Sage Kidhma before the action overpowered by passion.  Madri revealed her helplessness to Kunthi that Pandu was irrepressible as if he was hastening to bring the curse of Sage Kidhma into authentic.   Kunthi in an extreme distress advised Madri that as the elder wife of Pandu it was her responsibility to follow her husband after death too, Madri should raise the children in her absence.  Madri helplessly in an acute pain replied that Pandu’s desire and appetite was not satiated yet, he left his mortal coil without gratifying his desire, and it was Madri decision to follow him in the other world to satisfy him, thus keep away herself from committing further sin.   Madri sorrowfully revealed her inability to raise the children of Kunthi as her own.  Madri dejectedly spoke that King Pandu embraced death while seeking pleasure from her, so it is her duty to burn herself in the funeral pyre of him; eventually Madri sacrificed her life in the funeral pyre of King Pandu.

Rishi Vaishampayana narrated the conversation between Pandu & Kanthi during their stay at woodland.  Kunthi was traumatized after listening to Pandu’s command to have a child from a Brahmin or someone superior to Pandu as Niyoga.   She heartily desired to have a child from her husband and her willingness to die with him.  Kunthi was determined to remain unblemished in her life and refused to approach anyone for a child other than her husband.  She narrated the story of a righteous King Viyushithsva and his chaste wife Badra.

There was an honorable ruler King Vyushithasva, he ruled his kingdom wisely for several years and the people of his Kingdom were happy.  He conducted a grand Yagna to please the deities, Lord Indra and scholarly Brahmins were present in the Yagna.  King Vyushithasva attained highly meritorious rewards from the Yagna.  In order to expand the Kingdom and its resources, he performed an Ashwamedha Yaga, eventually he defeated all the neighboring Kingdoms and took good control over them, the countries came under the rule of King Vyushithasva was obliged to pay tax.   Thus, he ruled the Kingdom judiciously for several years and conducted several Yagnas and Yagas to please the deities, the scholarly Brahmins were presented with abundance of alms as charity during the fire sacrifices. In this way, he attained highly commendable rewards and his Kingom flourished with rich resources.  He continued to perform admirable Yagnas like Agnisthoma and significant Yagnas and Yagas mentioned in the Veda Sastra.

King Vyushithasva had a gorgeous wife Bhadra, she was the most beautiful woman in the Universe.   This loveliest couple has found plentiful time in the company of each other and found immense pleasure in the physical relationship with each other.  King Vyushithasva’s excessive physical attraction towards his wife caused severe breathlessness consequently he passed away.   Bhadra was devastated at the death of her beloved husband.  Kunthi narrated the miseries of a widow; it was wretched life for Bhadra after the death of her husband, she desired to embrace death and follow her husband.   She pleaded her husband to allow her to follow him after death too, revealed her helplessness to live in the absence of him, a woman without a husband serve no purpose to the society; Bhadra cried her heart out at the separation from her husband, she experienced the agonies of hellish torture while she was alive.  Bhadra discarded all the comforts and adopted sacred grass as her bed, treated herself as the sinner with tears teeming all over she waited to hear command from her deceased husband.  Bhadra wept with mounted pain and closely embraced the lifeless body of her husband, soon she could hear a mysterious voice informed Bhadra that she would be blessed with children, further advised Bhadra to leave the place and remain with the lifeless body of her husband in her bed on the eighth or fourteenth day of full moon that would provide her progeny.  In this way, Bhadra attained seven children from the lifeless body of her husband.  Kunthi praised the virtues of Pandu and consoled him that the meritorious rewards attained would help them to have children.
